About Ñirehuao National Reserve

Located in the Aysén Region of southern Chile, Ñirehuao National Reserve covers a remote and ecologically significant stretch of the Patagonian temperate rainforest. Characterized by dense stands of coigüe, lenga, and the namesake ñire trees (Nothofagus antarctica), the reserve sustains a wide variety of native flora and fauna, including endangered species such as the kodkod cat and the Darwin's fox. The terrain is varied, featuring rolling hills, river valleys, and wetland areas that contribute to the rich biodiversity and fresh water sources. Established to protect these ancient forest ecosystems and their inhabitants, Ñirehuao offers opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and nature photography. Due to its remote location with limited infrastructure, visitation is low-impact and mainly attracts dedicated naturalists and adventure travelers. Key landmarks include old-growth forest stands and pristine river corridors. The area is significant for its conservation efforts aimed at preserving the unique Chilean temperate rainforest environment amid threats from logging and climate changes. Visitors appreciate the escape into solitary wilderness and the chance to experience Chilean Patagonia's rare temperate forest ecosystem in a relatively untouched state.
